Green woodpecker

The European green woodpecker or green woodpecker (*Picus viridis*), also known locally as *ghionoaie verde*, is a bird from the woodpecker family (Picidae), slightly larger than the Eurasian collared dove, with yellowish-green plumage. It feeds on insects, especially ants from anthills, but during the cold season it also consumes grains; it is found in old forests and builds its nest in the cavities of dead trees. In Romania, it is present year-round and is distributed across hills and lowland forested promontories. It is frequent in Dobruja, but absent from the Danube Delta.

It is a large woodpecker species with low sexual dimorphism, as both sexes have a relatively similar coloration: a red crown and nape, light gray cheeks with a narrow black mustache, a pale light-gray belly, and a green back. The male has a red patch in the center of the black mustache, which is absent in the female. Body length is 30-36 cm, with an average weight of 138-250 g. The wingspan ranges between 45-51 cm.
